The Maasai community in Laikipia is made up of around 5000 members who have a long-standing tradition of herding livestock in the challenging terrain of Northern Kenya. They are recognized as one of Africa's leading tribes, known for their nomadic and pastoralist lifestyle. The Maasai people are a Nilotic ethnic group found in different parts of Kenya, including the north, central, and south, as well as in northern Tanzania.
Laikipia, meaning 'treeless plain' in Maa, is a county in Kenya spanning 9.5 million hectares, within the expansive Ewaso ecosystem. This region that we call home has been inhabited by the Maasai people for centuries, known for its stunning natural landscapes and diverse ecosystem. This area includes wildlife reserves, ranches, grazing areas, and agricultural properties. However, prolonged droughts in recent years have threatened both human and animal communities who rely on the land for sustenance. Recognizing the dangers of climate change, we are embarking on a transformative journey to preserve the Maasai cultural heritage and adapt to challenges such as water and food scarcity, as well as losses of livestock and wildlife.
In the face of the current challenges, we have embarked on a new project with a mission to combat the pressing issue of food and water scarcity. This endeavor marks a vital step forward in overcoming these obstacles and setting the stage for a future free from such hardships. We are truly thankful for the guidance and encouragement provided by a dedicated team in the United Kingdom, whose diverse expertise spans international development, corporate leadership, and community empowerment. With their mentorship, we are determined to build a sustainable and promising tomorrow for generations to come. Let's join hands and work towards a brighter future together!
